Ketamine

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine was first used as an anesthetic during the 1960s for both humans and animals. In the 1990s, ketamine became a controlled substance, as it was widely abused for its psychoactive components. During the early 2000s, scientists found that ketamine, administered by a medical professional, is a very effective treatment for depression, PTSD, anxiety, and OCD. Some individuals with suicidal ideation found that ketamine helped improve their mental state in as little as 24 hours, making ketamine a life-saving treatment.

History

For decades, psychedelics such as ketamine, psilocybin, and LSD have been associated with substance abuse and illegal activity. In 2019, after years of research and clinical trials, the FDA cleared the use of a ketamine, a Schedule III controlled substance, for treating depression in nasal spray form. After seeing impressive clinical results, ketamine began to grow in popularity as a treatment method for a variety of mental conditions.
