Faith Crisis

What is a faith crisis?

It is common for individuals to question what they believe. The process isn’t comfortable; those experiencing a faith crisis may feel like they don’t know what they believe, or how their faith fits into their life. Changing expectations and cultural shifts can cause an individual to reconsider their stance on faith. This may feel like the whole world has turned upside down, making life distressing and confusing. During times of a faith crisis, it is important to have someone to speak to, such as a friend, family member, or therapist. A non-judgemental ear can make all the difference in sorting out the complex feelings and experiences associated with a faith crisis.

Common questions associated with a faith crisis

  • Do I truly believe this?
  • Where do I fit into the grand scheme of things?
  • Is this something I want my children to grow up in?
  • What do I have faith in?
  • Do I believe all of this, part of it, or none of it?
  • Does this even matter to me personally?
  • Why am I feeling these things?

Talking through your faith crisis with a therapist can shed new light on your emotional and mental health.

Medication

Though medication isn’t always the solution to a faith crisis, it is an excellent solution to depression and anxiety. Should your faith crisis stem from a mental illness, it may be helpful to speak with a psychiatrist.

Lifestyle Changes

It is important to have proper nutrition and sleep during a faith crisis. Abstaining from drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol is beneficial as well.
